Dancehall Star Shaggy bearly recognised by New Generation - replaces major lazer though

In a report from TheDartmouth.com it was pointed out that ..In a performance that will conjure nostalgic memories of the early 2000s, Jamaican-American singer Shaggy will replace electronic music duo Major Lazer at this weekend’s Green Key concert. At the show, he will perform alongside rapper ASAP Rocky after Major Lazer dropped out for a last-minute commitment in France last week. While many students were surprised by the choice, those interviewed said they were excited to revisit some of the hits Shaggy released during their childhoods.

Shaggy’s website and Facebook page confirm his May 17 performance on Gold Coast lawn. Programming Board, however, declined to comment on Shaggy’s selection.

Shaggy, born Orville Richard Burrell, is a former Marine who fought on the frontlines in the Persian Gulf War. His stage name was inspired by his shaggy hair and the name of Scooby-Doo’s companion in the popular animated cartoon franchise.

Shaggy is primarily known for his hit song “It Wasn’t Me” (2000) and won a Grammy in 1996 for his album “Boombastic.” Two of his songs reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and “Hot Shot” (2000) was certified six times platinum in the United States.

Matt Garczynski ’14 was surprised Programming Board chose an artist who he has not heard mentioned in over a decade.

“He’s not relevant, he’s way in the past,” Garczynski said. “But it’ll still be fun in the way it would be if they brought back a band like Blink-182.”

Garczynski said Shaggy still has name recognition and will make for an interesting pairing with rapper ASAP Rocky.

Since Shaggy played a “significant part” in her childhood, Kelsey Sipple ’16 said she is excited to feel nostalgic about the past.

Many students interviewed also did not know much about the singer.

Jacob Savos ’16 said he was unfamiliar with Shaggy.

“I don’t know who he is, but I’m sure he’ll still be a good addition to the show,” Savos said. “I think the majority of people will definitely like his style of music. All the reactions I’ve seen have been very positive and people have been very excited.”

Maya Herm ’13 said Shaggy is an upgrade from last year’s Green Key weekend, when Programming Board did not host an official concert. Herm said she thinks Shaggy is a bigger name than Major Lazer.

Myles McMurchy ’16 said Shaggy’s style might not appeal to all students.

“I think he will appeal less than Major Lazer because Major Lazer is at the forefront of the dance and electronica music that is really popular right now, whereas Shaggy is a reggae artist, which is not as mainstream,” he said.

McMurchy added that he thinks Shaggy’s music is “a lot of fun” and the student body will have as much fun watching Shaggy perform as they would at a Major Lazer performance.

Shaggy is credited with making reggae music more accessible to the American public at the turn of the century. By 2001, his album “Hotshot” reached the top of the charts over albums from major artists, including Jennifer Lopez and The Beatles. Rolling Stone magazine’s David Fricke called Shaggy “Dancehall reggae’s genial ambassador” in 1997.

Shaggy’s 2002 and 2005 albums failed to garner as much commercial success as his previous efforts.

Recently, he has been focusing on live performances and concerts over making albums.

Shaggy will perform at 7 p.m. on Friday on Gold Coast lawn.

The Irony - impersonators worry about being Impersonated

Sometime ago round head was awfully worried about twin of twins copying his style, eat food off it and him a dead fi hungry. now the table has shifted a bit as it was pointed out in a recent report in the star that Dancehall duo Twin of Twins is asking selectors to ignore unscrupulous individuals who are claiming to be Ankle Socks, who is a fictitious character in their most recent CD Stir It Up Volume 10.

According the twins, at least two persons have claimed that somebody has approached them under the name Ankle Socks, while seeking to sell jingles.

Patrick Gaynor who spoke to The STAR says, give us our props.

"We heard from more than one person that somebody is saying that they are Ankle Socks, but don't say that because we made that character. Just give Twin of Twins their props if you admire the work, and don't try to pretend that you are a literal character," he said.

According to the twins, several of the characters are based on the personalities of real people, examples being Jah Mikes, Big Wayne, Bounty Killer, Mutabaruka, Mr Adams among others. However, other characters like Ankle Socks are fictitious.

"Because of the attention and the success that Big Wayne got out of the CD, people are hoping to get the same success. So I guess that is why they are trying to mimic a character," he said.

Twin of Twins also took the opportunity to clear up misconceptions pertaining to the originators of certain popular slangs.

"A we first sey 'I are the one' Bounty Killer never said that in his life until we sey dat on our CD. 'Wah duh man yah man' by Big Wayne - a we sey dat on the CD. Plus other slangs with Julian and so forth, so don't mek mistake and think the slangs were made by the real characters, it's all Twin Of Twins," Gaynor said.

The artiste says the success of the latest CD has already got them tour dates.

"We are getting a lot of calls from local promoters. We have our US, tour starting on Monday; we also have an Africa tour coming up, so the summer is going be busy. The success of the CD is overwhelming because it has only been released for a little over two weeks and we have tours coming out of it," he said.

Twin of Twins also revealed that their tour will carry both dancehall and comedy displays. Some popular scenes from the CD will also be re-enacted live onstage.

Jamaican Dancehall Music cleaned up a little bit and Back on the Rise

In a recent report by Chris Mugan in New Zealand Herald he pointed out that dancehall is back on the rise as it was A decade ago a gay rights group called for the arrest of several singers over lyrics they said incited violence.
With Bruno Mars and Wyclef Jean guesting on Diplo's new Major Lazer album, Jamaican artist Busy Signal guesting on No Doubt's comeback record and bass-heavy tunes heard in Britain's hipster clubs, Jamaican dancehall seems to be enjoying a peak of influence on mainstream pop and underground dance.

And yet, a decade ago, the genre was mired in controversy.

As a musical term, dancehall has been used since the '80s to describe a distinct style emphasising rhythm over melody, with Sly & Robbie among its most famed producers.

A step-change came with the ditching of in-house bands for pure digital instrumentation, providing a platform for the high-energy ragga vocalists that emerged in the '90s and vied to provide the killer line over popular backing tracks, or riddims.

Vybz kartel betrayed by Popcaan and Tommy Lee?

In a recent report in a local news paper Incarcerated deejay Vybz Kartel has rubbished allegations of being beaten behind bars.
According to the self-proclaimed world boss, he is in high spirits and is focused on the journey set before him courtesy of local authorities.
"I want the fans to know that I am physically okay. I have never been stabbed, kicked, punched or beaten and I did not try to commit suicide. Jail is undoubtedly, unquestionably the worst place to be on this planet called Earth, but as it relates to my encounters with the correctional officers at the institution, I have no complaints," he said in a letter addressed to The STAR.
The artiste says he has received continued support from his parents and his common-law wife and babymother during his tribulation; however, he remains disappointed with some of his former musical associates.
"Despite being denied bail recently, and being betrayed by Popcaan and Tommy Lee whilst going through the darkest hour of my existence, I am unparalleled in my determination to remain positive. I do a lot of reading and writing and usually try to exercise." he said.
His book, The Voice of The Jamaican Ghetto co-authored by Michael Dawson of People's Telecom fame, received favourable feedback in places like Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Bulgaria, Chile and Amsterdam, and recently spiralled a debate from literature enthusiasts about whether it should be included in the CXC syllabus.
As a recording artiste, Vybz Kartel remains current and relevant in the dancehall genre, receiving the Artiste of the Year awards for both Youth View and Portmore Awards, respectively.
"I would like to thank all my fans who have been behind me in my time of peril and unjust prosecution. Thanks for your continued support of my music, making me the recipient of Youth View's Deejay of the years 2011 and 2012 as well as Portmore Awards 2012, plus voting countless songs to the number-one spot on the reggae/dancehall charts worldwide," he said.
Kartel has been in custody since September 2011. He and his co-accused are to return to the Home Circuit Court on May 27 when it is expected that their trial will begin.
The artiste and accomplices are alleged to have murdered Clive 'Lizard' Williams at Vybz Kartel's home in Havendale, St Andrew, on August 16, 2011.
